My investigation of “RABBIT” began with a fixation on the 1972 children’s novel Watership Down written by Richard Adams. The novel vividly depicts the journey of a group of anthropomorphized rabbit bucks in the English countryside, attempting to resettle after the destruction of their warren by human development. Having held an affinity towards the book since childhood, I decided to make a live action remake/adaption/sequel in order to tell the story of the rabbit does and kits, whom are completely omitted from the narrative of the original warren in the novel.
But after buying a pet rabbit at the onset of the project the film turned into a expansive research project into symbolism, iconography, rabbit domestication, reproductive justice, breeding political propaganda and caregiving. Or is caretaking?
Following the intertwining history of rabbits and femmes, a central theme is prey-ness; What does it mean to embody prey-ness in society? To oscillate perpetually in the trapped position of prey?
